In today’s digital age, personalizing your devices is more than just a preference, it’s a path to enhanced productivity and ease of use. Whether it’s a smartphone, tablet, or desktop, customizing your home screen can transform your interaction with your device, making it more intuitive and aligned with your daily needs.
As someone who is deeply in love with productivity and order, I’m always looking for ways to improve my digital life. This post is the result of years of experimenting to find the ultimate method for setting up my mobile in the most efficient way possible.
In general, as Chilon of Sparta famously said, “less is more.” If I had to sum up this post in one sentence, it would be: your mobile home screen should only have around eight of the most important apps – four on the top and four on the bottom. Mostly because we instinctively unlock our phones at least 150 times per day, having fewer apps on the home screen leads to less disruption.
Why Customize Your Home Screen?
Customizing your home screen isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about functionality. By arranging your apps and widgets to suit your routine, you can access essential tools and information more quickly, streamline your tasks, and improve your overall device usability. Whether you’re trying to figure out “how do I get home” using the most efficient navigation apps, or you need to know “how to get an app back on your home screen,” we’ve got you covered. Stay tuned as we explore the ins and outs of home screen customization, providing you with the tools and knowledge to tailor your digital environment to your preferences and lifestyle.
Getting Back to Your Original Home Screen
Sometimes, amidst the customization process, you may find the need to revert to your device’s original home screen layout. This can happen for various reasons – perhaps you’re troubleshooting, or you simply prefer the simplicity of the default layout. Whatever your reason, here’s how you can reset your home screen on both Android and iOS devices.
For Android Users:
- Access the Settings App: Navigate to your device’s settings menu. This is typically represented by a gear icon on your home screen or in your app drawer.
- Find the Home Screen Settings: The exact pathway can vary depending on your device’s manufacturer, but you generally need to look for “Home Screen,” “Display,” or “Wallpaper and Themes.”
- Select ‘Reset to Default’: Many Android devices offer an option to revert to the default home screen layout. Tap this option and confirm your choice to restore the original settings.
For iOS Users:
- Open Settings: Tap on the settings icon from your home screen.
- Go to ‘General’: Scroll down and select the ‘Transfer or Reset iphone’’ option.
- Reset Home Screen Layout: Within the General settings, find and select ‘Reset.’ Here, you’ll see an option to ‘Reset Home Screen Layout.’ Tap it and confirm to return your home screen to its original state.
This will restore your apps to their default arrangement, with pre-installed apps in their original positions and third-party apps in alphabetical order.
Remember, resetting your home screen will not delete your apps, but it will rearrange them into the default order. If you have any folders, they will be disbanded, and apps will be reorganized. Always ensure that any important data or app arrangements are backed up or noted down before you proceed with this reset.
By understanding these steps, you can confidently manage your home screen, ensuring it always meets your needs, whether you’re longing for a fresh start or reverting to what’s tried and true.
Adding Apps to Your Home Screen
Whether you’re using an Android or iOS device, adding apps to your home screen ensures that your most used applications are within easy reach.
Note: Some Android phones don’t have this option in the settings. Instead, you can go to the apps section, long-press on the app you want to add to your home screen, and then drag it to the desired spot on your home screen.
For iOS users:
- Touch and hold an app: find and select ‘Edit Home Screen’.
- Edit mode: The apps will start moving, indicating they are ready to be reorganized.
- Reorganize Apps: Drag them to the home screen or to any other desired page.
- Set New Location: Click anywhere on a blank space to set your new location.
Organizing Your Home Screen for Maximum Efficiency
A well-organized home screen not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your device but also boosts your productivity by ensuring that essential apps and tools are easily accessible. By following some best practices for organizing your apps and icons, you can create a more intuitive and efficient interface.
Prioritize Essential Apps
As I mentioned earlier, choose the eight apps you use the most and arrange them in an orderly fashion. This will ensure that your most critical tools are always within easy reach, minimizing the time spent searching for them. Here’s how to do it:
- Identify Your Top Apps: Take a moment to reflect on which apps you use most frequently. These might include messaging, email, calendar, camera, navigation and any other apps crucial to your daily routine.
- Arrange in Order: Place these apps in a structured layout on your home screen. Ideally, position four apps at the top and four at the bottom, as shown in the image below.

This simple arrangement can significantly streamline your daily interactions with your device, helping you stay organized and productive.
Integrating Widgets for Enhanced Functionality
Widgets are powerful tools for increasing the utility of your home screen. They provide quick access to app functionalities and display information at a glance without needing to open the app itself.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of adding widgets to my home screen because I prefer to keep it as clean and minimal as possible with minimal disruption. However, I’ll explain the process of adding them in case you would like to.
To add a widget on Android, long-press on the home screen, select ‘Widgets,’ and choose the one you want to add. For iOS users, touch and hold the home screen until the apps jiggle, then tap the ‘+’ icon in the upper-left corner to select a widget, choose a widget size, then tap Add Widget.
For Apple Users: Smart Stack vs Widget
Smart Stack is a pre-built collection of widgets that displays the right widget based on factors like your location, an activity, or time. A Smart Stack automatically rotates widgets to show the most relevant information throughout the day.
A widget is just a single application, or a component of an interface, that enables a user to perform a function or access a service.
Customizing Widgets
Customization is key to making your home screen truly yours. Both Android and iOS allow you to customize widgets to some extent, such as resizing them or altering their appearance to fit your home screen’s theme or layout. Experiment with different widgets and customization options to find the perfect setup that meets your needs and preferences.
By thoughtfully adding and organizing apps and widgets, you can transform your home screen into a highly functional and personalized dashboard, streamlining your digital interaction and keeping essential information just a tap away.
Categorize Your Apps
This one isn’t much of a home screen tweak, but for me, it was a big life changer. Just as I love to keep my home screen with as little clutter as possible, this method is my top recommendation for organizing the rest of your mobile screens.
I love to group similar apps into folders to reduce clutter and make it easier to find what you’re looking for. For example, you can have a folder for social media apps, another for productivity tools, and one for entertainment. This categorization not only streamlines your home screen but also helps you mentally compartmentalize your apps based on their function or purpose.
I like to sort them alphabetically, just like the image below:

Organizing Your Home Screen for Maximum Efficiency
A well-organized home screen not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your device but also boosts your productivity by ensuring that essential apps and tools are easily accessible. By following some best practices for organizing your apps and icons, you can create a more intuitive and efficient interface.
Utilize the Dock Wisely
The dock is the area at the bottom of your screen that remains constant across home screen pages. Use this space for apps you need quick access to regardless of what home screen page you’re on. Common choices include phone, messaging, email, and music apps.
Keep It Simple
Avoid overloading your home screen with too many apps or widgets. A cluttered home screen can be overwhelming and counterproductive. Use just enough to ensure functionality without sacrificing ease of use or aesthetics.
Regularly Review and Adjust
Your app usage may evolve over time, so it’s a good idea to periodically review and rearrange your home screen. This might involve updating your folders, replacing less frequently used apps with new favorites, or tweaking your widget setup to better suit your current needs.
By implementing these strategies, you can create a home screen layout that not only looks good but also enhances your efficiency and interaction with your device. This organized approach ensures that your most important apps and functions are always within easy reach, streamlining your daily mobile interactions.
Dealing with Difficulties in Customization
Customizing your home screen can sometimes be tricky, especially with the variety of devices and software versions available. Here’s how to overcome these challenges and make the most of your device’s features.
1. Explore Device Settings: Each device has its own set of customization options. Spend some time exploring the settings menu where you can adjust the size of icons, the layout of your home screen, and more.
2. Use Third-party Apps: If your device’s default options don’t meet your needs, third-party apps can offer additional customization features. Apps like Nova Launcher for Android or Launcher for iOS can provide more flexibility.
Leveraging Home Screen Features for Better Accessibility
Enhancing accessibility through smart home screen organization can make a significant difference for users with specific needs.
Enhancing Home Screen Accessibility
Modern smartphones come equipped with features that improve accessibility, making devices easier to use for everyone, including those with disabilities.
Voice Commands: Tools like Siri and Google Assistant can greatly enhance accessibility. For instance, simply saying, “Siri, how do I get home?” can initiate navigation without the need to manually type or search for directions.
Simplified Layouts: Both Android and iOS offer options to simplify the home screen by enlarging icons, increasing text size, or reducing the complexity of the interface, which can be beneficial for users with visual impairments.
Customizing Home Screen for Different User Needs
Tailoring your home screen according to specific needs can greatly enhance a user’s interaction with their device.
1. For Caregivers and Health Professionals: Widgets that provide quick access to communication apps, medical information, or reminders can be crucial. Tools like medical ID apps for quick access to emergency contacts or health records can be lifesavers in critical situations.
2. For Individuals Seeking Health-Related Information: Apps that track diet, medication, or exercise are beneficial. Placing these apps prominently on your home screen can ensure they are easily accessible.
In a nutshell, the ability to customize the home screen is more than just a perk—it is essential for maximizing productivity and ensuring that your smartphone works for you.
Throughout this article, we’ve explored various methods to personalize and troubleshoot your home screen, enhancing both its functionality and accessibility.
